CAL3VIN (Calvin), also known as ‘Cal’ is a sampled based underground hip hop beatmaker and instrumentalist from Oxon Hill, Maryland, now residing in Tampa, Florida. CAL3VIN has goals that are definitely worth hearing about. "Creatively, I am always working on new music and consistently learning new programs or techniques. If you look at the current producer or beatmaking landscape on social media, you see people whether they're just starting or seasoned, they’re always pushing out their music to reach a new audience. It’s cool to see because you can see their growth with each post or project and that’s something I hope my listeners and followers notice too. I just released an instrumental single titled, “Rooftop Views” on streaming platforms. It has a Lofi/Chillhop vibe to it. Also, I released “The Remixes 3 DMV Edition” on Bandcamp and on my Youtube channel. All remixes are from Logic, Cordae, Wale, Ade’ and Pusha T. All artists from the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area.”
CAL3VIN has been making a solid base in his city and has great intentions in mind with his work. Seen at shows this year specifically, he makes a difference in the business with his music skills. Known as dedicated, hardworking, and honest, CAL3VIN, comes from humble beginnings and has strong passions for his upcoming work. “Just the responses I receive from the folks that enjoy listening to what I create and what I put out is inspiring me to work on my endeavors. If it wasn’t for them, I’d question what I’m doing or possibly quit. I have overcome struggles by reminding myself to just have fun. Because as soon as that goes away, the mental struggles and doubt will follow.”
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Oxon Hill, Maryland. It’s located in Prince George’s County. The area is almost like a Tri-state area since Virginia and Washington D.C. are five to ten minutes away.
Give Three qualities that describe you:
I pride myself on hard work, dedication, and being honest. These traits I’ve always had when I was younger but enhanced throughout my life and lessons learned while being in the U.S. military.
What piece of advice do you want others to take back from the work you display?
Keep pushing. Always continue to learn from others and your peers. Avoid comparison, it’s a dark rabbit hole that can be hard to escape. Have fun creating music you love. They say you’re one beat or play away from an opportunity happening, so keep at it.
Even though CAL3VIN is devoted to perfecting the art of his craft to the highest level, his hardships have made him want to do even better in his business as well. CAL3VIN is now focused on continuing to be the best in his city, so that he can build on his already strong foundation even more than it already is with his music. “Some obstacles I have had to overcome are still understanding and learning the music industry. It’s easy to be unaware about contracts, deals, and rights. Seek a good mentor already with experience in the industry or do as much research as you can.”
CAL3VIN’s influences in life have helped him with his music production career. He explains the individuals whom he gives credit to. “Music production wise it would be 9th Wonder, Alchemist, Havoc of Mobb Deep, Khrysis, The RZA. But I always give credit to Pete Rock. He’s the first producer that triggered my curiosity as a kid about sampled based Hip-Hop in the 1990s. And all the people who continue to listen, follow, and share what I create.” As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, a lot of big-crowd events, like concerts and festivals, were banned in 2021 and some parts in 2022 as well. This was because of restrictions put in place by both the city and the federal government. As a result, the number of chances for artists to show off their skills has been dramatically cut down. However, CAL3VIN remains steadfast through it all and ends with a piece of motivation he can have others take back.
