Our exclusive interview with Jonny T and listen to “Chubby Girl Swag” Ft. JTLR & Lyric Richardson

Today we invite you to discover Jonny T’s musical universe, our artist of the day who surprised us thanks to his latest release “Chubby Girl Swag Ft.JTLR & Lyric Richardson”.

It was only right to meet with Jonny T, discover our interview below:

1- Great to have you on our blog. Please, introduce yourself?
Thanks for having me. My name is Jonny T. I’m a recording artist, producer, podcaster, and all-around digital marketing geek. I’m a pretty nice guy, too!

2- What got you into music and made you realize that it was your chosen path?
I started years ago in high school. I wasn’t part of the cool crowd by any stretch of the imagination. I saw these guys banging out beats in the lunchroom. Everybody paid a dollar to rap and whoever had the best rhymes won all the money. So, I went home and started writing raps over a Chubb Rock instrumental. And I practiced that rap for about a week. I paid my dollar, kicked my rhymes, and actually won! In one moment, got paid, got a little respect, and a little attention from some cheerleaders – I was definitely with that! Superficial reasons brought me to rapping, however I really started studying all the elements of Hip Hop – MCing, DJing, Breakdancing, Graffiti Arts, and Knowledge. I developed a genuine love for the Hip Hop culture as a whole, as well as an appreciation and understanding of the music business as time progressed.

3- Tell us about your new project. And what’s the story behind it?
I’ve always had love for the big girls. Way before there was an internet and definitely before Drake was shouting them out. My partner Lyric Richardson and I actually created the concept for this song years ago. We revisited the concept, produced a new track and felt like the timing and energy was right to release it. We haven’t done a song to celebrate this segment of our fan base in over 5 years. This one is for all the plus-size queens – city to city, ghetto to ghetto. On top of the timing, I feel like I have the right partnership and label support with Equity Distro. The team is thorough, provide incredible artist support & services, and they’re principled around artist ownership. They have worked releases for Kelly Rowland, Fat joe, Tinashe, and so many next generation acts. I’m excited to have my name and projects in the mix of their system!

4- What makes your music unique? How would you describe it?
There are so many sub genres of rap. If I had to describe it, I would say I fit into the mix of ‘Adult-Contemporary Rap” Or “Adult-Contemporary Hip Hop.” I have a pretty mature sound. Lyrically, I’m not overly complex but not overly basic either. I make the kind of records that appeal to fans of lyrics on certain tracks and a slightly more commercial and fun vibe on others. I embrace that because the songs I record are authentically reflective of the way I think, feel, and live at different points and times of my life. Most of my releases don’t contain profanity either

5- What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?
Learn the business and the rules of engagement. In this day and age, we are all literally walking around with computers in our pockets. Pull up the Google machine and ask it some music business questions and read some answers. Maybe take some online classes. Many of the courses cost less than some Jordan’s or a night out. Take care of business so your business can take care of you!

6- Who are your biggest musical influences? And any particular artist/band you would like to collaborate with in the future?
Diamond D, Positive K, EPMD, Redman, Fat Joe, Chuck D, De La Soul, Nas, Hieroglyphics, Pete Rock, Masta Ace -I mostly want to rock with the legends.

7- If you had one message to give to your fans, what would it be?
Keep Conquering! Stay invested in whatever makes you a better human being. Take care of all facets of your health -physical, mental, emotional, and financial.

8- What’s next for you? Any upcoming projects?
Chubby Girl Swag Remix EP produced entirely by Madd Scientist. There are Twerk, Dancehall, and Reggaeton versions of the song. Madd Scientist featured me on his upcoming single called Bop Vibes and that will be released by the Orchard/Sony Music later this year in September. New Christmas music with Lyric Richardson & JTLR on November 2, 2021. Pitching a lot of music for film and commercial placements.
